Hearing loss symptoms most often occur gradually. Sometimes it can start with turning the volume up on the television, or asking people to repeat themselves. For others, it can start with a persistent ringing in the ears. No matter how your hearing loss begins, it is important that you get your hearing checked to prevent your hearing loss from getting worse.
Types Of Hearing Loss
There are three different types of hearing loss. The three types of loss are conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Sensorineural loss is caused by issues in the inner ear. Conductive loss is caused by issues with the ear canal, eardrum or the middle ear. Mixed means that there is both conductive and sensorineural loss occurring. If someone is only dealing with the sensorineural loss they can more than likely get instant help from a hearing aid. In order to get a hearing aid, it is important to get your hearing tested.
If you start to feel as though you are losing your hearing, the next step is to make an appointment with an audiologist. They can do an examination and determine the cause and level of hearing loss. During your hearing test, an audiologist will be able to look for fluid in the ear, play sounds to determine your hearing, and more.
Additionally, the audiologist will diligently monitor the eardrum and monitor the pressure in the ear. Then the person will listen to various decibels of sounds and indicate which ones they can hear clearly. Then two syllable words will be spoken for the person to repeat. This indicates how well they determine speech. During a part of the session, background noise may be played. This is their way of determining how well you can hear in a noisy and less than ideal environment. After completing the hearing test, the audiologist will be able to determine your level of hearing and determine what type of hearing device is right for you.
If you or a loved one is experiencing any type of hearing issue, you should schedule an appointment with an audiologist as soon as possible. The sooner any possible hearing loss is detected, the sooner a plan can be put in place to help you or your loved one maintain your level of hearing.
